I didn’t grow up by the sea and didn’t think about studying marine anything after school. I found out about it while I was studying for a first degree in biology. I then changed my course and studied marine biology, which includes quite a bit of oceanography. That was in 1991 or so. Never regretted it!
When I decided I wanted a career that would take me outside, allow me to experiment, allow me to make hypotheses to test, use my computer knowledge, use physics and maths, be adventurous (but not dangerously adventurous). I didn’t want to spend my life in laboratories; I wanted to connect with the outside world too.
In my first year of my undergrad degree. We were on a fieldcourse and one day was marine science – we went on a boat along an estuary and got to put instruments in the water to measure how salty it was. I really enjoyed the day and plotting up the data so took more oceanography courses through my degree and then did a PhD (research degree) in oceanography! I hadn’t heard of oceanography or marine science before I started university.
