  My proudest achievement was obtaining a PhD from the University of Aberdeen. it was very challenging yet rewarding experience. I learnt a lot, meet other Scientists and got to travel a lot for training.

  I am not “proud” of achievements. Nor can I think of one that stands out. I prefer to say I am “happy” that I understood how lakes get warm and cold layers in summer, how the water moves in sea-lochs, how the wind and tides move water around in coastal inlets, and how at the age of almost 80 I can still do science that is useful to people.

  Two things come to mind: professionally I am proudest of developing a visitor centre about marine science called the Ocean Explorer Centre in Oban. I feel good when I walk through the pretty small centre and see families or school groups enjoy finding out about how the marine environment works.
  
  Personally my proudest moment was though when my daughter played me in a performance. I had developed a marine science festival in which schools wrote and performed various marine based contributions. Unbeknown to me her class had put together a play exploring why some marine fish species had died out, and they were asking ‘experts’ including me. Turns out the extinctions happened because of too much litter. As a working mum who loves her job I always feared that I spent too much time working and not enough with the kids. It felt amazing when I saw that my daughter was proud of me, despite everything.

  Getting my PhD and not suffering too much from it! I’m really proud I managed to still have a life and and enjoy my free time while writing my manuscript (although the last 2 weeks were challenging).

  As part of my job, I had to testify in a public hearing against an activity that a developer wanted to do. I’m very proud that I was part of the team that helped us win!

  I can be hard to be proud of yourself; often others are proud of you! I would still say my greatest achievements are my BSc Hons and being trusted to train others in my skills and knowledge throughout my career.
