The challenges vary a lot. I’ve recently had a big one with my PCR not working, that I’ve finally worked out. I love problem solving and it’s a big part of my work, but PCR is an old technique that I’ve done before so I was thrown a bit by it not working and not being able to work out why. Usually the problem solving is in coding and statistics.
There’s also things like presentations (I get really bad anxiety), time management for major deadlines, going away from home for work, managing my budget, etc.
We are lucky to be pretty free as marine scientists and can often design our own projects and jobs. For me that means usually that I overcommit and come up with too many ideas, so I have to juggle too many tasks. This stresses me out and I can’t even blame anyone else… At the moment I only have wonderful colleagues and collaborators, but the most challenging time at work is if you have colleagues you don’t respect or get on with.
