Camilla Cassidy answered on 9 Nov 2023:
Hi! My favourite thing about my job is that it lets me be curious, and to approach problems in a way that is uniquely ‘me’, in the way I best think makes sense. In school you’re often told ‘use this formula’ or ‘here is what to do to solve this problem’ – as a scientist, there’s often no set way to do things and, even when there is, it’s up to you to figure out what it is, learn about it, and do it right. I think being a scientist is like being a detective, or a professional puzzle solver – you have to find all your evidence, all your pieces, put it in the right order to work out what’s happening, and then make your case to other people that you’re right!

I think best of the things is that I am bringing my positive contribution and skills to the domain, and to the community, trying to make a positive impact.

The best thing about my job (or my jobs) is that it allowed me to work with all sorts of interesting people. For example, physicists, chemists, biologists, engineers, ships’ crew, lawyers, mathematicians, computer people, radar experts, fish farmers, European scientists, oil experts and many others. And if I was interested in any of these things I was usually lucky to have the time and money to do some of it myself.

Having each day look different and the opportunity to keep learning new things. It turns out I have a low threshold for boredom (I really don’t like being bored) so this job is perfect for me as it is always changing.
