Sometimes are too many tasks, this depending on your next level supervisor. If everything is managed well, normally you are not stressed. You need to manage well your health and wellbeing to can work effectively. Science require focus.

Often the questions I’m trying to answer have never been asked before, and need me to come up with a way to answer them, as well as to actually do that working out and answer it. That can be stressful, but it means that you have the independence to decide what to do, and it can be fun to work out and piece together all the available information to inform your decisions.

Not having a permanent job, I only have short terms contracts and it’s stressful not to know when I’ll have to look for a new position somewhere (or apply to a permanent position in my current lab). Also having to deal with lots of different project at the same times, some that are new and exciting, some that are nearly finished with an urgent dead line and some that are finished and I just need to write a paper and publish my results (but this takes time and is less fun that analysis so I tend to delay it until I can’t push it anymore)

The most stressful things in my jobs have been when I had to work with (or for) people who were incompetent and would not admit their mistakes or try to put them right. Or when working with people who only thought of themselves and would not stick up for their juniors.

These are problems that are not only found in science, but in almost all jobs.

For me probably all the competing deadlines. It can be overwhelming at times when you’re working on multiple big projects at once and they are all demanding something from you at a similar time. But you just need to work efficiently, make sure you have your priorities right and also don’t be afraid to ask for help when you need it!

Generally, the most stressful part of my job is dealing with developers who want to find the easiest solution and not the most environmental. It’s my job to convince them that I am right and their consultants are wrong in order to get them to do what we need them to do to protect the environment.

The most stressful aspect of my job is managing multiple deadlines, from grading assignments to preparing lectures (classes). Time management is crucial to ensure everything runs smoothly! 📚🦐⏰

Whilst Iove the variety in the job that I do that does sometimes mean that I can have alot of things going on at once and alot of deadlines to reach at the same time which can be stressful. But I make sure that I keep my to do list up to date with DATES so this allows me to manage my time more effectively

I’m based in one research institute but have my lab work in another, and a placement in yet another institute. I really struggle with a lot of elements of this. The travel for the lab work, never feeling like I’m part of any team, having to rely on other people regarding reagents for experiments and them often letting me down and wasting my time, which I don’t have a lot of.

My own enthusiasm stresses me out: I get excited and commit to more projects than I can deliver. And I also like people and make time for them, further reducing the number of committed projects I can deliver. I don’t mind it so much, but my family gets frustrated with me…

The most stressful part of my day is waking up! I love to sleep so getting out of bed and being at work on time is stressful! Thankfully the rest of my job is easy-going. I work with a lot of people who are very knowledgeable and hard-working which makes my life easier. Being involved with several projects can be stressful at times because there are multiple deadlines which must be met within a specific timeframe, so sometimes I need to work a little harder to meet all the deadlines.

On a broader sense the constant look for funding as well as short contracts can lead you to change fields or move lab, so need to get used very fast to new techniques new lab materials, and new teams. In a more daily work life, the pressure to write and submit papers is the part of the job I found the most stressful.

The workload can be a lot, especially when doing a PhD! As a research scientist you are often looking into the unknown, where no one has the answers, so it can feel daunting at times….but also exciting!
